Digital Music Day At UNC To Showcase Legal Music Downloading Alternatives

Chapel Hill, NC April 10, 2004--The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will be hosting the Digital Music Day, an event designed to curb illegal file-sharing, which will let the university community try digital music downloading services for free. The event will feature MP3 players and speakers, and students will be entered in a drawing to win prizes. The Digital Music Day will be open to the public and held on April 21st, 2004 from 10am-2pm in the Student Union.

The event is senior Adam King's semester project for the Residential Networking (ResNet) program and is being sponsored by Apple, the RAM Shop at Student Stores, the Information Technology Resource Center, Information Technology Security, the Carolina Computing Initiative, and ResNet. Adam King organized the event in response to the growing number of digital music services available: "I don't think students are aware that these services exist and that, when it comes to buying tracks and entire albums, they're pretty cheap. We wanted to give students a chance to try and learn about what's out there."

Students will be able to try five different digital music services, iTunes, Napster, Rhapsody, Musicmatch Jukebox, and Emusic for free on a variety of cutting-edge IBM and Apple laptops. iPods and iPod Minis will also be featured along with accessories, speakers, and headphones. There will be recordable CDs available to let students try burning songs with the different services. A drawing will be held to give away an MP3 player, speakers, and 20 iTunes gift certificates.

As well as being able to try music services, students can get their questions about copyright law, file-sharing, and what is considered legal and illegal answered at the event's security table.

The Digital Music Day is being held in the Great Hall of the newly renovated Frank Porter Graham Student Union from 10am-2pm on April 21st. The Student Union is located at the center of UNC's campus next to the Pit, Lenoir Hall, and Student Stores. Refreshments will be provided.
