9th Annual Experimental Music Festival

PRESS RELEASE FOR:
THE NINTH ANNUAL OLYMPIA FESTIVAL OF EXPERIMENTAL MUSICS June 26-29 2003

The Olympia Strange Music Society was founded in 1995 by Arrington de Dionyso and Jim McAdams, two KAOS dj's who agreed that while Olympia was
certainly a fertile ground for independent rock music, there were other genres of very visceral music that were under-represented in the "scene".

The first annual Olympia Festival of Experimental Musics was held in May of 1995, in conjunction with the Seattle Festival of Improvised Music. In the following years the festival was moved to the last weekend in June.

What is Experimental Music? The Olympia Festival of Experimental Musics does not concern itself with answering this question directly, but each year presents a very diverse group of performers, each with their own very different approach to working with sound and performance.

While there are festivals with similar aim all over the country (usually in bigger cities known for experimental music), the Olympia Festival avoids the "stuffiness" of some more formal presentations of experimental/new music by
keeping to the small town "DIY" punk ethic that is so associated with Olympia's music history.

Each year the Festival has grown considerably in international reputation amoung the connaisseurs of avant-garde music. Each festival has presented an amazing diversity of approaches to and backgrounds in experimental music, from new composition, free improvisation, avant-rock, avant-jazz, noise, electronic, and music that is undefinable except to say that is it very
strange. Every festival has featured performers astounding in their years of mastery of their forms and instruments, with international reputations. Every festival has also made room for younger performers very new to
experimental music. More than a few times we have hosted a young experimental musician's very first public performance.

The down-home enviroment of the festival is such that old masters and young amateurs can interact freely and thoughtfully without need for ego and
pretension. This year will be the first year that the festival has hosted a night set aside especially for collaborations of music with dance, which will be held at the Heart and Soul Dance Studio on Sunday June 29th.

The Ninth Annual Olympia Festival of Experimental Musics is curated by Arrington de Dionyso. Performers will be arriving from Seattle, Portland, Bay Area, Los Angeles, Chicago, NYC, and Portugal.
